Balli e Lamenti: Contrasts in Early Italian Vocal & Instrumental Music.
Mezzo-soprano Burcu Gulec and percussionist George Lernis join El Dorado Ensemble (Carol Lewis, Janet Haas, Mai-Lan Broekman, Paul Johnson, Alice Mroszczyk, violas da gamba; Olav Chris Henriksen, lute & theorbo) in a showcase of laments, dances and florid music by Strig- gio, Piccinini and Kapsperger, and a special performance of Monteverdi's "Lamento d'Arianna."
Admission is $20 for the general public, $15 for students, seniors, and Museum members.

New England Mosaic Society (NEMS) exhibition: Opening Reception.
Juried exhibition of contemporary mosaic works featuring the New England Mosaic Society (NEMS) artists.
Thursday, February 22 - Sunday April 7, 2018
The exhibition will feature the work of 60 artists from the six New England states. In addition, Cynthia Fisher, Isabel Margolin, and Lisa Houck, three internationally known mosaic artists from New England, will show their work in an Invitational Exhibit. The show will also include a Salon, where NEMS members can exhibit and sell their small mosaics.
Exhibition hours: Thursdays 2 - 7 p.m. | Fridays 2 - 5 p.m. | Saturdays 12 - 5 p.m. | and Sundays 12 - 5 p.m. on February 25, March 4, March 18, and March 25.
The exhibit will be accompanied by a series of workshops on a variety of mosaic techniques - for adults and children.More about the exhibit and the workshops...

A Consort to Delight: English Renaissance Music for Broken Consort.
Three melody instruments (Carol Lewis & James Williamson, viols; Na'ama Lion, flute) and three plucked instruments (Olav Chris Henriksen, lute; Peter Lehman, cittern; Matthew Wright, bandora) play 17th-century settings of popular ballad tunes ("Go From My Window," "Bachelor's Delight" and others), as well as pavans, galliards and almains by Allison, Morley, Dowland, Reade and John Johnson.

Mascharada! Musical Surprises from 17th-century Germany.

Cresap's Rifles: The Untold Story of the Riflemen who Helped Save George Washington's Army
A talk by Champ Zumbrun
The untold story of crack elite riflemen from the Appalachian region who served as "George Washington's Continental Army Shock Troops." These backwoods men saved Washington's army during the Siege of Boston in the summer of 1775. Their story takes us along on their marathon march from Maryland to Massachusetts, and recounts their battles at Boston Neck and Ploughed Hill. Cresap's Rifles, coauthored by the speaker with Robert Bantz, Karen E. Cresap and Nina Cresap celebrates these long forgotten men.

Triple Decker Ecology: an Installation by
Pennie Taylor and David Buckley Borden
The museum’s first Community Curators explore land use history, current environmental issues, and future possibilities.

Opening Reception
Triple Decker Ecology installation includes historic objects from the Somerville Museum collection, and new works that consider site-specific environmental issues. The artworks communicate issues, raise awareness, and spark direct action. Programming with local organizations, citizen scientists, and community artists let museum visitors see what work is going on right now in Somerville, and how they might join the cause.
Works connect soil, water, air, trees, direct action, and data to historic imagery, flags, and infrastructure.
Collaborators include CC McGregor, Mike Demaggio, Jack Kohler Byers, Jackie Barry, Alyson Fletcher, Kate Sokol, Marc Davenport, Weather is Happening, and the New England Regional Council of Carpenters.

Triple Decker Ecology - Somerville's Urban Landscape Opening Reception
Triple Decker Ecology explores urban environmental issues of Somerville (then, now, and future). Curator Pennie Taylor presents an interdisciplinary installation by artist David Buckley Borden and collaborators that includes both local artifacts and new works inspired by the Somerville Museum’s historic collection.
The exhibit will be on view October 11- December 9, 2018

The Yankee Division in the Meuse-Argonne Offensive: A talk by Dan Breen
In the Fall of 1918, the United States army fought the biggest and bloodiest single battle in its history up to that point: the terrible Meuse-Argonne Offensive. The Yankee Division, including men from Somerville, were fully engaged in that battle. This lecture pays tribute to their memory as we commemorate the 100 anniversary of the end of the First World War.

Fabula di Orfeo: an Entertainment in Italian Poetry and Song.
This will be an extravaganza of music from the early Italian renaissance, featuring mezzo-soprano Burcu Gulec, countertenor and cornetto virtuoso Michael Collver, with Steven Lundahl, sackbut and recorder, James Williamson and Carol Lewis, viols, Olav Chris Henriksen, lute, and George Lernis, percussion, performing works by Tromboncino, Cara, Pesenti and others, with poetry by Angelo Poliziano.
